By: Leigh Ann Kopans Genre: Romance, Young Adult Pages: 300 Goodreads rate: 4.44/5 stars Summary From Goodreads: 1 crush on your best friend + 1 gorgeous, scheming new girl + 1 Mathletics competition = 1 big mess SIMPLIFY. Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy. But when gorgeous new girl Sofia rolls in and steals Brendan, Ashley's place on the team, and her fragile foothold on the Mansfield Park Prep social totem pole, it’s on. Sofia is everything Ashley left her old school to escape. The only thing Ashley didn’t count on is Sofia’s sexy twin brother Vincent. Vincent is not only the hottest boy in school, he’s charming, sweet, and he’s got his eye on Ashley. He’s also not taking no for an answer. There's no real reason Ashley shouldn't like Vincent, but with the battle lines being drawn between her and Sofia, Ashley’s not sure which side he’s on. Or which side she wants him to be on. She does know Sofia is trouble with a capital T, and she’s determined to make Brendan see it. SOLVING FOR EX is a YA contemporary romance that remixes Mansfield Park as Clueless meets Mean Girls in a crazy mix of high school society, mathletic competition, and teenage romance. My Review My Rate: 4.6/5 stars The Plot I found this book adorable, I agree I might be a little biased, being a nerd and all, but I feel like any reader that liked contemporary romance would like this book. This book did take on the plot of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park and resembled it in many ways. One of the things I didn't like about this book was that I have already read Mansfield Park and I had already knew the outcome of the book, which was a little disappointing (there's nothing worse when you know the outcome of books). I found it adorable how at the end of each chapter Leigh left a little math problem that when solved would leave a message, the answer would be portrayed in the first few chapters but towards the end they would stop with the answer. The math problems might be a little harder for younger math students. There were some parts in the book that was a little confusing, like when Brendan said he didn't like Sofia but then still kissed her, I found it a little puzzling. The Characters The characters were a little confusing at times, first we get Vincet, he's charming and kind, but then he blows up at Ashley for nothing, it just wasn't his character, he showed no signs of moodiness or traits of anger, he just exploded. It was so out of context that I was surprised, but not in a good way, if you want a character to explode like that you need a little foreshadowing, sure there was the part when he was cheating but I just didn't expect it.
